How to Determine Your Skin Type & Basic Regimen

It can be difficult to pinpoint your exact skin type, especially when the weather and environment can have such a big impact on the day-to-day condition of your skin, but two key indicators determine your skin type: genetics and oil production. The most critical part to building your skin regimen is to properly identify your skin type and pick your core, daily products accordingly. These are our recommended basic regimens by skin type, but they can always be personalized with alternative products.

Determine Your Skin Type

When do you become shiny during the day?

  • Shiny all day = OILY
  • Midday, mainly in the t-zone (forehead, nose, chin) = COMBINATION
  • Almost never = DRY

Typically, you have one skin type but there is an exception: sensitive skin. Because skin sensitivity isn’t related to oil production, you can be Sensitive Oily or Sensitive Dry.

Oily Skin

With oily skin, the sebaceous glands overproduce oil, leading to a shiny complexion and clogged pores.

Oily Skincare Regimen

People with oily skin are more prone to large pores and breakouts, so the goal of a daily regimen should be to regulate and purify with oil-controlling agents. These are our top picks.

Combination Skin

Typically, those with combination skin aren’t overly oily or overly dry, but a little bit of both. You may become oily midday in the t-zone. Even though the skin may feel dehydrated and tight at times, you still produce oil.

Combination Skincare Regimen

When your skin becomes dehydrated from lack of moisture, it's critical to hydrate and restore the skin's water content. Before applying your daily moisturizer, use a hydrator for a moisture boost. Your daily routine should be all about bringing the skin to balance with light to medium weight formulas. These are our top picks.

Dry Skin

Dry skin rarely becomes oily and occasionally feels tight and flaky. While pores are likely tighter and harder to detect, fine lines tends to be more apparent. There’s a difference between dry and dehydrated skin, so don’t be fooled by seasonal dryness.

Dry Skincare Regimen

Dry skin needs products that are emollient and conditioning to help smooth, soften and revitalize. These are our top picks.
